SUPERSTAR Rajini releases ‘Goa’ music

At a time when everyone was expecting a grand audio launch function of ‘Goa’, since it is the maiden production venture of Soundarya Rajinikanth’s Ocher Studios, the film had its music launch in a simple way on Monday.

The music album of the movie was released by Superstar Rajinikanth at his residence in Chennai. The simple function was attended by the cast and crew of the film directed by Venkat Prabhu, besides officials from Sony Music.

Says Venkat Prabhu, “I feel proud that Goa’s audio was released by the Superstar. He is always there to encourage us right from the days of ‘Chennai 6000028’. He is hopeful that ‘Goa’ would become a super hit.”

On the film’s music, he says, “Yuvan always comes up with special tunes for my films. He has repeated the magic in ‘Goa’ too. All the songs have come out well. They would rock audio charts soon.”

Kamal Haasan's films not to be part of IFFI

Kamal Haasan was honoured with yet another award, this time for his Lifetime's Achievements in cinema. But the actor and filmmaker feels that the southern film industry lacks the initiative when it comes to participating in national film events.

Haasan recently completed 50 years of being in cinema, yet he will get no recognition at one of the biggest film festivals in the country - the International Film Festival of India.

The festival's retrospective will be featuring films of actors Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore and Soumitro Chatterjee - who also complete 50 years in cinema. But Kamal Hassan's works will not be a part of it, allegedly because the actor wanted seven of his films to be screened instead of just the proposed three.

However Haasan refutes this claim, "Some of my friends advised that. Somebody asked the question whether I insisted on seven. It's my friends and well-wishers in Delhi, to name Karthikeyan, he said three won't do, it has to be seven, we will do it in Delhi and that is how it became."

When asked if Bollywood was being given preference over the Southern film industry? Haasan answered, "No it usually happens. The fault is also ours, we don't represent ourselves well. We don't go to meetings, we don't participate. They make do with whoever is participating. It's a diverse culture, there should be unity in diversity."

But awards and accolades continue to pour in for Haasan. On Tuesday, Haasan was honoured for his Lifetime's Achievements in films by the Rotary Club of Madras. And the actor is also expected to Chair the FICCI media and entertainment enclave to be held on Thursday and Friday in Chennai. Not only that, a retrospective of his films is also in the offing.

We hear that Shankar has brought in an extremely strange Volvo bus in to the sets. Birdies say that the director has transformed a normal Volvo bus into a satellite remote sensing lab. This makeover process of the bus has cost a whooping 50 lakhs!

A scene in which a morph gang attacks the robot Rajini, who is inside this satellite remote sensing lab, is being filmed. The blow of the news is that our superstar is not in the shooting spot at all. It’s a stunt artist who is masked as the robot Rajini.

Using a dupe is not a big deal as our Superstar is a real-time hero. What say people?

Director-actor Manivannan’s daughter’s wedding took place in Chennai on September 7th amidst film personalities. Notable among them were Rajinikanth, his wife Latha Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Cheran, Sundar C, Sathyaraj, Sibiraj, Kushboo and others.

Speaking at the wedding ceremony, which was in accordance with the Suyamariyadhai Marriage followed by the Dravidar Kazhagam followers and atheists, Rajini blessed the couple for a long and happy married life. He said only a wife would follow a husband through the bad times and there relationship should be more of companionship.

The Superstar said that not many know that Manivannan is an ardent follower of Periyar ideals and he was amazed with his knowledge about Periyar during the Padayappa shooting. Earlier, Sathyaraj handed over the mangalasutra to Rajini who gave it to the bridegroom. Cheran welcomed the guests and director Seeman thanked one and all for gracing the occasion.

Rajinikanth’s elder brother Sathyanarayana Rao on Sunday said that the Superstar would make an announcement on his political plans after the release of his forthcoming film ‘Endhiran’.

Speaking to reporters in Tiruchy, where he attended a function organised by Rajini fan clubs, Sathyanarayana said, “Rajini’s full concentration is now on ‘Endhiran’. He has been working hard for the movie. He would make a decision on his political entry after the completion of the film.”

Stating that he was not in Tiruchy to hold any consultation but to attend a function organised by fan clubs, the Superstar’s elder brother said the matinee idol would make a right decision (on political entry) and announce it at a right time.

At the function, a CD titled ‘Makkal Manam Kavarndha Mannan’ on Rajinikanth was released. Karnataka State Rajini fans club president Chandrakanth and a large number of fans from Trichy and Chidambaram attended the function.

Tamil film industry rubbishes Lankan claim

The Tamil film industry has sharply criticised Sri Lankan Minister for Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Abdul Rishad Bathiudeen’s statement claiming Rajinikanth’s movies received funding indirectly from the LTTE.

Rishad had mentioned, in an interview to Asian Tribune, that a lot of money of the LTTE had benefited Rajinikanth, PMK leader Vaiko and S Ramadoss. He claimed that money from the LTTE was being diverted to a London-based Tamilian to make films with the superstar.

Condemning the remark, Rama Narayanan, president, Tamil Nadu Producers’ Council, said: “There’s no need for LTTE to fund a Rajinikanth film indirectly through anyone. And Rajinikanth is in no necessity to take up a project financed this way. There are a lot of producers here waiting to do a film with him and he will not resort to a project like this. Whoever has claimed it should have done so for cheap publicity, because they know anything about Rajinikanth makes it to the headlines,” he says.

Another producer, on conditions of anonymity, said there was no basis to the claims made, calling them “random, uncalled for” remarks.

Director-producer Ameer, known as a sympathiser of the Eelam Tigers, said these remarks were made only to defame the LTTE, which the people empathised with. “His statement has come without proof. It is only a political statement made with the intention of portraying the Tigers in bad light. This is akin to Harshad Mehta who once infamously said he had bribed former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao for financial favours. By stating this, they have tried to divert our attention,” said the director.

Actor Rajinikanth, who has not worked for a film produced by a London producer so far, chose not to respond to the statement. The actor is currently in Chennai shooting for his flick, Endhiran. His public relations officer said the actor, who was informed of this, did not wish to make any comment.

The closest the superstar came to working with a Sri Lankan producer was for his current film. Endhiran was originally supposed to be produced by Ayngaran International, owned by a Sri Lankan Tamil from London, C Karunamurthy. A leading film distribution network, apart from being a high-budget production house, Ayngaran, however, later backed out of the project. Ayngaran had earlier widely distributed Rajini’s previous blockbuster Sivaji The Boss, in the international market, apart from holding the international rights to his earlier films Chandramukhi and Padayappa.

Kamal Haasan completes Half-century in Film IndustryCome August 15, ‘Ulaganayagan’ would complete his 50 jubilant years in the film industry.

The great actor on August 12, 1959 appeared first in front of the camera as a child artist in AVM’s Kalathur Kannamma.

Kalathur Kannamma was the debut film of Kamal Haasan as a child artist. The film was directed by Bhim Singh in which Gemini Ganesan and Savitri played lead roles. At that time, Kamal Haasan was just five years old, and he won the best child actor National Award for his performance in the film.

Kamal Hassan is the only actor in the country who achieved milestones for himself, and he has acted in all the four South Indian Languages and even in Hindi and some Bengali movies.

Recently, Kamal Haasan had conducted a seminar along with IIT-Madras on ‘International Workshop and Seminar on Screenwriting’ to stress the importance of screenplay in cinema.

On this, an elated Haasan said, “I am happy with the fact that people have been kind to me, including my teachers, my technicians and even my critics. I consider myself as being fortunate, lucky not having some nasty accident.”

Speaking Sunday at the audio release of "Eeram", produced by Shankar's 'S' Pictures and directed by newcomer Arivazagan, Rajnikant said: "Shankar is an example of hard work, coupled with smartness and efficiency."

Rajnikant, after the success of "Sivaji - The Boss", has teamed up with Shankar for "Endhiran", which also stars Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai.

An unexpected accident interrupted the shooting of Rajini's magnum opus Endhiran yesterday. One of the film crew's technicians was suddenly hit by electric shock and admitted in the hospital at Adyar Chennai.

The accident occurred yesterday, early in the morning when preparations were in full swing for the day’s work. As the shooting was yet to start at that time, director Shankar, Rajini and other artistes were not in the sets.

What’s the experience of shooting Endhiran (Robot), the most expensive Indian film ever?
It’s an experience. I’m playing the main antagonist in the film against Rajinikanth’s double role. The film is pegged at a budget of Rs 175 crore. Director Shankar has pre-designed the entire film in animation. Now, they are shooting the live action. The planning is amazing and the impact will stun everyone.

This play home is dedicated to the early delicate and sensitive learning years of children. The focus here will be on psychology, emotional health and the core development of a “little human being”. The project is fashioned in such a way that children with a person familiar to the child can come to the Anandavana at a time of the child’s convenience.

“For a little kid the school is an alien place full of unfamiliar people. When children are picked from home and dropped at school, they undergo emotional trauma. In our system, the child will slowly get familiar with the outside environment and by the age of six, he or she will be ready for school and begin their formal education,” she said.

Announcing the launch of project here on Wednesday, she said, “Under the banner of TASSC, I have been in the process of establishing a model structure covering education from the early kindergarten years to the higher education and career levels. Now, TASSC functions under the early budding years to the higher secondary level with the ICSE Board Curriculum. Our launch of ‘Anandavana’ is a direction towards achieving the above goals.”

Dhanush not to be a carbon copy

Dhanush says that he is the only suitable person to remake the super hit film of Rajinikanth. In his recent interview to an English daily, the actor elaborately spoke about his remake of Rajini's Maapillai.

He said, “I’m doing a remake of Rajinikanth’s Maapillai. The rights were purchased by producer Hitesh Jabak two years ago and Suraaj has come up with a modern script. The shoot will start shortly.

I met Rajinikanth not as his son-in-law, but officially as Dhanush the actor and got his approval to do the remake. Who better than me to do the remake?"

In his reply to another question related to Rajini, Dhanush replied, "I do not want to be a carbon copy of Rajinikanth. When it comes to Tamil cinema, there can be only one superstar. I go through my scripts with a fine comb and look carefully at the character. I do films that suit my image..!"

Meanwhile, Dhanush celebrated his birthday
quietly without any fanfare or celebrations on Tuesday (today) in Chennai.

It is very delightful to know inside-out life of famous personalities. It would be fascinating to peek into the personal lifestyle of these larger-than-life heroes. It is wonderful to skim through the pages of high profiled actors in terms of biography books. But it would be more appealing if the same turns into moving images. And who can be more appealing than the Superstar himself. The Superstar’s biographical details have been already penned by Gayathri, a writer who brought out a book covering Rajinikanth’s life stories. And now Rajinikanth’s behind the reel life has been captured in the lens, in form of Documentary film.

Kavin Karthi, a Chennai based Engineering Graduate and an ardent Rajini fan, has brought out a biographical movie to express his love for the Superstar. The movie reflects all the important aspects of Rajinikanth – from his entry into Cinema to present status. Rajinikanth’s personal life, his success stories and movies, his contribution on political and charity fronts – the documentary covers all significant segments of the actor. The director had showed Rajinikanth the first look of the documentary and the actor stated some changes in the work.

After doing the corrections, the biographical film was launched at Ragavendra Mandapam, recently. The function was attended by Rajinikanth, the President of Rajinikanth Fans’ Club Ramdas and other dignitaries. The superstar was highly impressed with Kevin’s work and appreciated his fan’s efforts.

If you want to have a glimpse of the real Rajini, then wait for next month as the DVD of the documentary will be released then.

Wondering why? Well, he’s been meeting director Shankar to discuss the costumes for Enthiran (Robot). Manish, who has a hectic schedule, says, “My association with Shankar began quite sometime back. In fact, I had also designed outfits for Sivaji.”

The designer is full of praise for the director, who, he claims, is a down-to-earth person. “Shankar is a very easy person to get along with. However, at the same time, he is a thorough professional and demanding when it comes to work. I am also thrilled about the whole cast of Enthiran. Rajinikanth is very punctual. After a very long time, I am working with Aishwarya Rai. A few weeks ago, we were at Machu Picchu for shooting a sequence. We all had an amazing time there.”

Ask him what’s special about Enthiran and he replies diplomatically, “You will have to find that out for yourself when the movie releases or wait for Shankar to make an announcement.”

His association with Chennai is also not new. “My brother has settled here and my designs are showcased at Evoluzione-Diffusion in the city. In fact, my career as a designer first flourished in Chennai. On several occasions, I have come here to discuss costumes with directors for various movies such as Hindustani (Indian), Nayak, and Yuva,” says Manish.

He goes on to add, “I remember the time when I had to bring a set of costumes to Chennai for Sridevi and Chiranjeevi for the movie Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari. Sridevi specifically wanted two black dresses for a song they were shooting.”

Tell him the fashion scenario in Chennai has changed, and he adds, “For the better. There is no culture of extravaganza. People here don’t want to show off their wealth. There is glitz and glamour, but then, it perfectly blends with tradition.”

There have been continuous fashion weeks in the country. The release of Fashion has also pepped up people’s interest in the glamour industry.

A concerned Manish says, “I think we are going overboard with fashion. I have participated in various fashion weeks across the globe, but I haven’t heard of anyone hosting back-to-back fashion weeks. We just had two in Delhi and two in Mumbai. I am not saying that the other countries don’t have so many; it’s just that there needs to be a break after one show. Or else, it becomes an overdose of fashion.”

And on Fashion, the movie, he says, “Kangana, Priyanka and Mugdha have done a fabulous job. I wouldn’t say they have exactly portrayed the way this glamour industry works. There is an element of sensationalism to it.”

Ask him how he handles rivalry in the industry and he’s amused. “I get irritated at times and yell at people who don’t take their work seriously. I love cinema and love to see the characters wearing what I design. But life is not smooth. I have to strive to last in the industry and I am not rolling in money —I have to pay my assistants even if my designs aren’t a sell out. I don’t know how an artiste gets along with another one and I am not bothered as well. As long as they get along well with me, I am fine working with them. I have no complaints whatsoever.”

Finally, we ask him why Indian brands haven’t been able to make a mark for themselves in the international market and he says, “Fashion is global. Various market leaders back brands like YSL and Gucci. My own label, Manish Malhotra, isn’t backed by anyone. I do everything from designing to marketing for my brand. I think our brands need to have support to be catapulted into the international market.”

Superstar Rajinikanth, who is currently working on director Shankar’s ‘Endhiran’, is apparently rarely letting himself in the company of people other than his family. And now, the reason for this has been tracked to the look in the film he is working on.

Director Shankar, who earned a lot of praise, for making Rajini look a lot younger than he did earlier, in ‘Sivaji-The Boss’, is reportedly walking the extra mile to make Rajini look very young in ‘Endhiran’ too.

And it may be remembered that Rajini is being paired with Aishwarya Rai in this film, and the Superstar had earlier publicly announced that he was working on looking younger and fit to play her lover in the film.

Aishwarya Rai will soon be a part of a stunt sequence in Endhiran. Latest reports from the Endhiran camp say the actress has been working very hard and will be learning karate from stunt master Ramesh.

Aishwarya's commitment is only too well known and she also has the ability to pick up really fast, a rare ability as not many actresses pick up new skills fast. Musician Hariharan has recently lent his voice for a song in one of the most anticipated films of the year, 'Yanthram'. Revealing this, the composer and singer said it was delightful to be part of a Rajinikanth film, that too, in AR Rahman’s music. The song is the title track of the film, which is not to be confused with the introductory song, which, as always, is said to be rendered by SP Balasubramanyam.

Recently, when the beauty was shooting for Rajnikanth starrer ‘Endhiran’, the unit got to know of her grasp of Tamil.

According to reports, Ash decided to mouth her Tamil dialogues herself and decided against using a voiceover artist and got a grip of the language in no time at all. All of Ash’s hardwork seems to have won her Rajini’s admiration, for the actor is going all around town singing praises for the actress.

“Since Tamil isn’t really familiar territory for Aishwarya, everyone, including Rajini sir and director Shankar, was ready for several re-takes while she was memorising her lines. But soon she started rattling off the dialogues and getting the hang of the emotions with equal skill in both the Hindi and Tamil takes. This very much impressed Rajini sir, who has waited for years to work with Aishwarya”, says a source.

When enquired about her language woes, Ash said, “Regional languages have never been a problem. I did a Bengali film ‘Chokher Bali’ and was able to get a hang of the complex intonations while shooting. However, they later dubbed for my character as they needed a particular sing-song tone.”

Rajini, the real mantra of Tamil Nadu. Rajinikanth, the carpenter-turned-coolie-turned-conductor-turned Super Star says: "I couldn't have asked God for more."

A bit of a recluse, Rajni may be. But everyone who's had the privelege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step and a warm glow in the heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he's the sort who deserves all the superstardom he's earned. Such men, indeed, are rare...

The evergreen unique actor and the Superstar of Tamil industry, Rajinikanth was introduced by the renowned director, K.Balachandar in the movie Aboorva raagangal as a co-artist. It's been 25 years, believe it or not, since the Super Star made his debut with an inconsequential role in a Tamil film. From villain and antihero to blockbuster supernova, the gifted actor has made the most of every outing. And he's deserved every bit of the success. SCREEN analyses why...

It's a wide angle shot. A man is seen opening a gate, dressed in rags and smoking a beedi. A terminally ill disease writ large on his face. Precisely on that frame appears the Sanskrit term shruthi bedham, coupled with an off screen voice, an undoubtedly inauspicious start to any debutante's first screen appearance, especially in the maiden frame.

The film was Apoorva Raagangal (1975). The film itself was thick in controversy, and nobody took notice of the young newcomer, who was on screen barely for fifteen minutes, muttered a few apologetic words to the wronged woman and ultimately died an unsung, unheroic death.

No one in the audience, even in his wildest imagination, would have thought this nondescript man, who had won the least attention in the film would ever win over millions of hearts in Tamil Nadu. Or ride the state like a colossus. Or even that his sway over the masses would be so intense that he could rewrite the fate of Tamil Nadu politics, exactly two decades after the release of his first film.

K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student. Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the sudden offer from a big director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. It's a feeling Rajni still recounts whenever in the mood of reminiscence.

Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, Watch out! There is a fire in the young man's eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm. How true the prediction turned out!

Producers went all out to capitalise on this new wonder called Rajnikant, and a string of films projecting him as an anti-hero, with all his stylish mannerisms in full swing, were released in quick succession. Gayathri had him shooting blue films of his wife without her knowledge, Bhairavi, Shankar Salim Simon and the like. Rajni had, by now, become an indisputable star in his own right, a force to reckon with.

Though Rajnikant persistently refers to K. Balachander as his guru, it was director SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajni's image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, as a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second, accepting a woman with a child ditched by her lover. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted SPM to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan! That film was Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai, in which Rajni's mannerisms were totally missing and he even appeared as an old man in the last few frames. Even while the film was in the making, Rajni had misgivings about whether the audience would accept him in tear jerkers of this kind. But the film got made and its box-office success made Rajni popular among women audiences, too. These two films were a turning point in Rajni's career he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who also made them weep. The acceptance of Rajni sans his mannerisms proved he'd at last become an actor from a star. Around this time came Mullum Malarum, directed by J Mahendran, which established Rajni as a hero with a slight tinge of the negative.

Rajnikant's entry may have been humble, in an insignificant role but the success he achieved in a very short span was unimaginable. A popular Tamil magazine brought out a special supplement at a time when his still on the make, and, he presto, the magazine's sales doubled with that issue alone.

Such mass adulation, the thunderous rain of applause when Rajni delivered his lines, all put together, made him a phenomenon. It was at this point that Rajni realised the onus had been thrust on him. The fate of producers hinged on him alone. This sudden exposure to the glare of the media and the popularity and money he never imagined would be his, created a lot of stress in his mind. At that crucial time in his career when his market price had just begun to zoom, he decided to opt out of films completely, sending shock waves to his fans. Balachander, Kamalhaasan and his other well-wishers somehow, coaxed him into staying on.

The second phase of his life started with K Balaji's Billa, a superhit disproving the canard spread by detractors that Rajnikant was finished. He was accepted as a full-fledged hero. Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the all-important Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role. Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni's fans can never tire of the thalaivar's verbal clash with villain Senthamarai.
K Balachander's first home production, Nettrikkam proved to be yet another milestone in Rajni's career.

An analysis of Rajni's career graph shows a remarkable absence of fits and starts. It has been a slow and steady rise to the very top. As Rajni sings in a hit song from Badshah, a man's life may be divided into eight divisions. Rajni's own career may be divided into three segments. The first as a villain, the second as a hero with negative traits, and the third and present phase, as the reigning czar of Tamil filmdom. With Rajni's films fetching crores and his market price skyrocketing, the costs of production of his films became unmanageable. And Rajni has since had to stick to a one film per year formula, sometimes, he could do a film once in two years.

The new trend where his films' collections exceed normal regional film expectations started off with Badshah, followed by Annamalai, Arunachalam, Ejaman, Muthu and Padayappa. It's now an accepted fact that only a Rajnikant film can break records set by his own films.

As an actor, Rajnikant's greatest asset, apart from his style is his sense of humour and comic timing. Like Amitabh Bachchan is popular for his drunken soliloquies, Rajnikant is famous for his comic encounters with snakes, repeated umpteen times.

In the early 80s, Rajnikant made a foray into Bollywood with Andhaa Kanoon, a superhit. But Rajnikant could not concentrate on Hindi films because he was already safely ensconced down South. He still made a few films in Hindi, to mention specially Chaalbaaz which had Sridevi in a dual role. Rajni also enjoys a special kind of popularity in Telugu films and his Peddarayudu (remake of Tamil hit Nattammai) seems to have broken all previous records. The Telugu version of Padayappa has been a money-spinner, too. Rajnikant became a trendsetter recently with his Muthu and its songs becoming a rage in Japan and now, Padayappa running to packed houses in the UK and USA.

Basically a religious person, Rajnikant has always owned up his faith. "I was brought up by the Ramakrishna Mission and it's from there that I have inherited this religious frame of mind," he keeps saying. Even his films have him openly sharing his faith. In Arunachalam he mouths that famous line, "God decides and Arunachalam executes it." His public meetings are always spiced with humour and embellished with anecdotes from mythology.

Married to Lata, an English literature graduate, hailing from an elite Iyengar family in 1980, Rajni has two daughters who are carefully kept away from the limelight. Lata herself a versatile singer, now runs a school called The Ashram. The couple indulges in a lot of charity, the latest being converting his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam into a charitable trust to help the poor and needy.

Ego and starry airs are unknown to Rajnikant. During breaks he hardly ever rushes to his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he prefers to sleep on the sets, even without a pillow, merely covering his eyes with a wet cloth. He never comes to functions with a retinue behind him and even prefers to drive his own car.

Rajnikant's phenomenal success and his sway over the masses make people speculate whether he will follow the footsteps of the late MGR and enter politics. Though there has been a lot of pressure on him to enter politics by the likes of actor turned journalist, Cho Ramaswamy ("Rajnikant is the best choice for chief ministership because he has a basic integrity and simplicity, a quality which is very rare these days") Rajnikant has persistently maintained a diplomatic silence, except for the fact that he openly supported the ruling DMK in the last assembly elections and discreetly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. When pressed, Rajnikant answers in his own inimitable style, "Yesterday I was a conductor, today I'm a star, tomorrow what I'll be only He knows!"

A bit of a recluse, he may be at heart, but everyone who's had the privilege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step, and a warm glow in his heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he's the sort who deserves all the superstardom he's earned. Such men, indeed, are rare.
